Week 32

This week has been a week of sad times and great times!

The sad first. I had to say all of my good-bye's to my friends and family before I left Edinburgh. I have so many since I first arrived here back in January. It was very sad to say good bye and to leave them.

Now the great. Holy cow! I love it here in Ireland! I can not begin to tell you how cool it is here!

Last Thursday morning I woke up at 4:00 a.m. I made it to the bus stop where the bus would take me to Glasgow. In Glasgow I took another short bus ride to the ferry station. Once on the ferry, we set sail for Belfast, Northern Ireland. Once we made it to Belfast we took one last bus ride to Dublin. So I’m here!

DUBLIN is such a great place! I already love it here!

Here are my first impressions of Ireland. The people as a whole seem to be nicer than the Scots. They are very different. They seem to be more religious but seem to drink more! Go figure… Also the city of Dublin itself is not kept us as nice as Edinburgh. But with that said it just seems to have a nicer feel. I said before, I will miss Scotland but it is so good here! Our flat here is not as nice as the flats I had in Scotland. Their also seems to be a lot of different nationalities of people living here than there were in Scotland… And the language here is a wee bit different.  :-)

I am having such a good time. I am so loving life! To be honest, I am in the greatest mission in the world! It is just so good! I am so excited to be here in Ireland! I have already met and have been introduced to some of the ward members. I met Sister Ludlow. It was so great. She is so awesome!

Elder Clay and I are already working so hard! We have set a goal to baptize 3 of our Heavenly Father’s children before Elder Clay leaves for home. And guess what! We already have one set for this week. Saturday! On the first day I arrived here we found and taught a Chinese girl. She had already been to church once before. She loves the church. She wanted to know so much more. We went over to her home and taught her everything. I even taught her in my broken Chinese language! She committed to be baptized for this Saturday. She has the beginning of a great testimony. She believes in what she is feeling. She came with us to church yesterday. She loved it. So a baptism this Saturday! So many blessings!

Elder Elton should have some baptisms this week as well from those that we were teaching in Edinburgh!

Week 31

I am going to Dublin!!!

Ahhh man I am so excited to go to Dublin. Dublin is booming right now! I have wanted to go there since I first got my call! Lets go!

I got the call from President Donaldson on Friday. I am also being called to serve as a District Leader. My companion is Elder Clay. This will be his last transfer. He just completed being a Zone Leader. It will be great to have someone train me in a leadership role. I will be serving in the the more posh part of Dublin. An area and ward called Terenure! I am so excited to go!

Because of Easter I will leave Thursday morning! I will bus to Glasgow, Ferry to Belfast, and then onto Dublin! It will be so good!

I am also very sad to be leaving Scotland. Scotland is all I have known since arriving here on my mission seven months ago. I still am and will continue to miss my first area, Dundee. And now I will miss Edinburgh too. My first areas! I will miss all of the kilts people wear. I will miss the wards I have served in. I will miss all of the missionaries I have served with. And now I will miss all of the people I have served.

I will really miss Elder Elton. I will miss him dearly. He is my friend and my cousin! It just went way to fast. Way to fast.... Ahh man but I am ready to go to the Emerald Isle!

This last week was so good! We committed and progressed three people for baptism!

M******  26th of April
S**  26th of April
A***  26th of April

I am sad I will not be here to see them all get baptized. It was a blessing that I could be a small part of of their conversions.

Another couple highlights from this past week. Mae was able to come visit us briefly from Dundee. She is doing so good! Sunday was great too! It was Easter Sunday! I felt the Spirit so strongly! Church is always such a great time to think and ponder about my Savior. No distractions.

Love Elder Gowans

Week 30

Hello everyone. Here was my week.

Monday - We had a good p day. We went to the reservoir and had fun with some of the other missionaries. That night we went to China Red for dinner with some of our Chinese investigators.

Tuesday - I received the news of Delane's passing. We were having our district meeting. I will share some of my thoughts with you about this later.

Wednesday- We had 3 on the spot lessons. We found a really prepared soul. His name is M****** and he is from China. So solid.

Thursday - We drove to Livingston to do a baptismal interview. We also went to Brother Thompson's to do our weekly service.

Friday - Colleen, from Dundee, came to visit us. What a legend she is!

Saturday - Had my 9th pair of trousers rip.... Next Saturday is move calls. I  wonder if I will be staying in Edinburgh?

Sunday- We had two investigators to church. Church is always so great!

Last Tuesday, when I heard the news of Delane's passing, I was in shock. At first, I didn't know what to think. I held the printed e-mail in my hand and just stared at it. I was thinking that this couldn’t be true. Finally, when everyone left the room, I got on my knees, and with tears in my eyes; I asked Heavenly Father if the plan he has for us true? I finished my prayer, got up, and felt exactly the same. No clarity, no comfort. I finished working the rest of that long day and then returned to our flat that night. I opened my study journal, still with the printed e-mail in hand, started to read over my notes that I had taken from this last General Conference. As I read, everything seemed to stop and I felt this indescribable comfort come over me. This all happened when I was lead to this one scripture that President Uchtdorf read. Matthew 23:11.

"But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant."

Right then I knew that Delane was going to be all right. I knew I was going to be all right. My memories of Delane are memories of love and service! Delane served everyone around him. He served his wife, his daughters, his grandchildren, all of his friends, and our family. He literally served everyone. Delane is one of the greatest person's I have ever met. Every time I talked to Delane I always walked away from those conversations with a smile on my face.

I know that Delane is in a better place. Some of us may not feel that comfort right now. Some of us may feel like God isn't even there. But I want you to know that He is. And He loves us.

Elder Holland said this; "The Gospel of Jesus Christ gives us hope for a better world."

I know that the Prince of Peace knows how we all feel. I know that we can find that perfect peace in the Prince of Peace. And I know that I will see Uncle Delane’s smiling face again. Until then let us all press forward until we find that perfect peace.

Love Brett.

Week 29

This week was a good week! The sun was shining and the work was good!

Last Monday we ended up going to the same beach we went to last week. We played around and also fed some horses. We looked at the beautiful scenery that Scotland always has to offer! The beach is named North Berwick. Look it up. It is so beautiful!

Monday we were able to go have dinner with our most recent convert Sophie. Another friend of Sophie's was their with us. The dinner was so good!

On Tuesday we had a Scotland West Zone Conference. That includes the missionaries from Glasgow, Paisley, and Edinburgh. The conference was really good. I got to say the opening prayer. Kyle Singer from Dundee also payed us a visit from Dundee. It was so good to see that guy again! He is such a good friend.

Wednesday Elder Elton and I took an assignment from our Bishop which is called AUFs. This is where you go and find if people that are on the church records and see if they still live in our ward area. This assignment gave me the opportunity to drive for the first time in the UK! Holy cow was it a ride! Seriously though I thought I did really good. We had a lot of fun. After that assignment we did like 3 hours of chapping.

Friday we had interviews with President Donaldson. That is always a great experience. I see him a lot now. I am much closer to him now and feel more comfortable when I am around him! He is such a good President.

Sunday was another good day! We had three investigators come to church and watch conference with us. They all loved it! I think I loved it more! All the talks were so good and so uplifting! I love conference weekend! The sun was also out. Nothing but blue skies. Oh such a good day! I loved hearing our prophets voice again. Even though it was short. Just looking at him I can feel the spirit! I also saw Ruth Crosland!

After conference we went and helped the AP's move stuff in President and Sister Donaldson's home. Afterwards Sister Donaldson made us tea. I believe it was the best meal I have had since arriving on my mission! Sister Donaldson and I get along so well. She literally is like my mom. She is always asking me if I need anything. She is always making sure I am eating, which I am not, but it is always nice of her to care.

I love you all!
